Most Italian universities accept applications between mid-April and the end of May.

University application requirements
- Language proficiency certificate in either Italian or English

Language requirements
Universities teach both in Italian (B2 level proved by CILS or CELI exams) and English. It’s worth noting that the majority of English-taught programs are Master’s programs in Economics, Business, and creative subjects.
Scholarship opportunities
International students can get a scholarship based on their academic and professional merit or financial needs. Here are some scholarships:
- Bocconi Undergraduate Merit Awards (University of Bocconi) – covers tuition and sometimes cost of living
- EDISU Piemonte Scholarships (one of the universities in Piedmont (The Politecnico of Torino, the University of Torino, the University of Eastern Piedmont, etc) – may go as far as total coverage for tuition and living
- Bologna University Study Grants for International Students (University of Bologna) – can go as far as fully covering tuition + a grant of €11,059
- Politecnico di Milano Merit-Based Scholarships for International Students – fully covers tuition and may also provide a yearly stipend of €5,000-10,000
- Universita Cattolica International Scholarships – one-time payment of €5,750
- Scuola Normale Superiore PhD Scholarships – fully covers tuition and living expenses
The Italian government also offers grants to foreign students. The grant may cover tuition costs, medical insurance, and a monthly payment of €900.
Tuition fees
Italy strives to make education affordable to everyone, no matter of their income or citizenship. State universities in Italy set tuition fees based on the ISEE — a criterion to evaluate financial situation of students and their families. The lower the ISEE a student has, the less they pay for tuition (can be absolutely free).
However, some universities set fixed tuition fees for foreign students (€700-1,000).
International students can also apply for the DSU scholarship that may be as high as €5,400 per year. The amount is calculated based on the ISEE.
Moreover, based on the ISEE, students can live in student accommodation for free, get free meals, work, and get various discounts from universities and regional organizations.

Student visa procedures
Before you apply for a student visa, you’ll need to provide a certificate that confirms and legalizes your degree in Italy (dichiarazione di valore “in loco”). This certificate is issued by the Department of Legalization at the Consulate or Embassy of Italy.
Once you have a student visa and a student residence permit, you can work for up to 20 hours per week. After you graduate, you’ll have an orientation year during which you can stay in the country and look for a job.
