How Erasmus Mundus differs from Erasmus Plus

Erasmus Mundus Scholarship

Let’s first understand the main differences between this scholarship and Erasmus Plus Program. First, Erasmus Plus involves a one-semester exchange study during undergraduate or graduate studies. And EMJM is a full two-year master programs.  It is designed and presented by an international partnership of higher education institutions.

At least two or three higher education institutions from two or three different countries participate, of which at least two must be EU member states and third countries associated with the Program. What does this mean? You apply for the specialty you have chosen, and it is organized by at least three universities.

You either have a prescribed study plan, i.e. the program already takes into account in which countries you will spend each semester, or the program obliges you to study the first semester in the coordinating country, and then you can choose among the partners.

In addition, EMJM provides full financial support, which will be described below. And, of course, the main difference is the diploma: at the end of the EMJM program you will receive double or triple diplomas.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Programs

The programs included in the EMJM cover a wide range of specialties. For example, for creative people there are programs related to animation, dance, puppet theater. For people in science and technology, there are programs related to applied mathematics, optics, robotics, and nanoengineering.

There are also programs in the humanities, from management and communications to child and adolescent psychology. There are also programs in medical specialties with a focus on science.

The programs that make up EMJM cover a wide range of majors.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Size

The EMJM scholarship is one of the most generous in Europe. Firstly, it covers full two-year studies. Most programs have tuition fees of €9,000 per year or more. A monthly payment of €1000 is made to students in their bank account opened in their first country of study.

The scholarship provides free two years of health insurance and waives fees when you apply for a visa.

The program usually offers accommodation in university dormitories, and it is recommended that you live there for the first semester. You may rent your own housing, but you must pay your own living expenses from your monthly stipend.

Documents and Requirements for Applicants

To understand what documents you need to apply, let’s divide them into two packages.

The first and basic list of documents:

  • An undergraduate diploma and transcript, or a certificate with the expected date of graduation
  • Certificate of English proficiency
  • Letter of motivation
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • CV
  • Passport
  • A certificate of residence or employment (to prove that you actually live in your country)

The second set of documents is optional. Its necessity depends on the specialty you choose. It may include:

  • High school transcripts.
  • Certificates of participation in conferences and other events
  • Other language certificates

To qualify for the scholarship, the applicant must be in his or her final year of undergraduate study or have a bachelor’s degree. A suitable level of English proficiency and a strong motivation to study in a particular program is also required.

The Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Application Process

There is a website that provides a catalog of Erasmus Mundus master programs. Each program has its own website. It tells in detail about the program itself, the consortium, the partners, the curriculum, and how to apply.

For example, if I am an undergraduate student majoring in chemical engineering, I go to the catalog site and look for chemistry-related majors. Then I read more about each more or less appropriate major on its separate website. After that, I choose my favorites, and on the same sites I read about the application process. Applications are usually submitted between October and February-March, but the exact deadline for each major is different.

You will need to register on the application platform and follow the detailed instructions:

1. Check if your past or current education matches the program profile.

2. Verify that your level of English meets the requirements.

3. Check the necessary documents and start preparing them.

4. Register on the submission platform: each specialty has an individual one.

Usually, filling out the application starts with personal information. Then comes information about your past or current studies, and at the end – uploading all documents.

What else you need to know

The most important thing to know about Erasmus Mundus is that you need to prepare for your application in advance. This scholarship is very competitive, so you need to increase your chances by starting to improve and strengthen your profile. It is also worth considering the time you will spend on finding the right major for you and preparing documents.

It is worth enrolling in the Erasmus Mundus program for students who want to experience living and studying in different European countries, immerse themselves in their culture and create strong connections with people from different parts of the world. The program also allows you to establish contacts with professors at European universities and heads of private companies. And this will expand future opportunities for career development or continuing your academic path.

Impressions of Univibes advisors who received an Erasmus Scholarship

Natalia Askerova

“Erasmus Mundus gave me the opportunity not only to get a quality foreign education in my specialty, but also to live in several European countries with full coverage of expenses.

During my studies as an Erasmus student, I met many new friends from different parts of the world, with whom I still keep in touch. I also gained invaluable experience of living abroad and integrating in the cultures of other countries.”

“If you had no idea what to do next, Erasmus is the right program that will allow you to discover your features and talents, as well as see many worthy examples.

Your worldview and outlook on life are changing dramatically. In the first semester, at one of our first seminars, we were asked, “What do you want to do in the future? I answered ambiguously at that time, I did not have a clear picture in my head. However, after the first semester, I clearly saw myself as a doctoral student, where I am studying now.”
